During the month of July 2026, four members of our writing team grouped together with six notable foodie influencers to sample a handful of top-rated restaurants within central Denver. And while Denver's culinary scene has reached remarkable heights over the past few years, very few restaurants have generated as much excitement as Alma Fonda Fina. Located in the city's vibrant LoHi neighborhood, this intimate Michelin-starred restaurant has become one of Colorado's most sought-after dining destinations. Reservations often disappear the moment they become available, but guests consistently agree that the planning and anticipation are rewarded with one of the finest dining experiences in the state. Our group assembled (covertly) to absorb, experience and note our opinions of Alma Fonda Fina. Overall, we visited this wonderful spot four times.

If you've never visited this restaurant, it's name tells its story before guests even take their first bite. "Alma" translates to "soul," while "Fonda Fina" describes a welcoming neighborhood gathering place where family and friends come together. That philosophy comes directly from Chef Johnny Curiel, whose lifelong passion for Mexican cuisine began while growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico. After working in his father's restaurant as a young teenager, Curiel spent years traveling throughout Mexico, learning traditional recipes from home cooks, street vendors, and celebrated chefs before refining his craft in acclaimed kitchens across North America. Today, Alma Fonda Fina serves as both a tribute to his heritage and a celebration of contemporary Mexican cuisine.

From the moment you walk into the restaurant, you'll notice that the atmosphere perfectly complements the menu. You're almost instantly relaxed - the music, the smells of amazing food being prepared in the kitchen and the mild chatter around you. We were welcomed into the warm, modern dining room filled with natural textures, earthy colors, and an intimate layout that immediately feels inviting rather than formal. Not a large space, the cozy dining area creates an energetic yet comfortable environment where every table enjoys attentive service, while the chef's counter provides a fascinating front-row seat to the culinary team's precision and artistry.

Despite its Michelin recognition, we were noting that the experience as approachable, relaxed, and refreshingly free from pretension. Much of Alma Fonda Fina's menu is designed for sharing, allowing guests to experience a wide variety of flavors throughout the evening. The beautifully prepared Callo de Hacha al Horno has earned legendary status among regulars. These delicately cooked scallops arrive nestled in their shells alongside serrano ponzu, tomato butter, and fresh chives, creating an unforgettable balance of richness, brightness, and elegance. Many reviewers confidently describe them as the finest scallops they have ever eaten, praising both their presentation and flawless execution.

If you're not a meat-and-potatoes person, you'll be happy. Seafood lovers have plenty of additional reasons to celebrate. The restaurant's Bigeye Tuna Ceviche consistently earns praise for combining exceptionally fresh tuna with charred avocado, coconut broth, herbs, and chili oil to produce layers of flavor that remain vibrant without overwhelming the delicate fish. The Hamachi Tostada, Aguachile Negro, and beautifully prepared halibut showcase Chef Curiel's ability to blend traditional Mexican influences with refined modern techniques, resulting in dishes that are both comforting and remarkably sophisticated. Heartier selections demonstrate the same commitment to craftsmanship. The incredibly tender Birria de Borrego features slow-braised lamb shank served alongside house-made blue corn tortillas, beans, and salsa, inviting diners to build their own tacos.

But it doesn't stop at the seafood menu. Equally memorable are the richly flavored Enmoladas de Pollo, Frijoles Puercos topped with savory chorizo, and the restaurant's celebrated Taco Campechano, where two meats and dual salsas deliver a different flavor profile with every bite. Throughout the menu, fresh house-made tortillas repeatedly earn praise for being among the very best diners have experienced anywhere. One dish that has become almost iconic is the Camote Asado, an agave-roasted sweet potato served with salsa macha and fennel whipped requesón. Frequently recommended by returning guests, it offers a beautiful contrast of sweetness, creaminess, spice, and texture that perfectly illustrates the restaurant's philosophy of elevating familiar ingredients into something extraordinary.

Now this will surprise you - Alma Fonda Fina does not currently offer 'traditional desserts,' but the staff recommended that we consider ordering the sweet potato a satisfying finale to an already unforgettable meal. During our four visits, we ordered the same 'dessert' each time. Fabulous. Their happy hour also provides outstanding opportunities to sample favorites like the Queso Fundido and Taco Árabe while enjoying exceptional value. The beverage program is equally deserving of attention. If you'd like to visit this restaurant during happy hour, you won't be disappointed.

If you enjoy a delicious wine or cocktail with your meal, their creativity extends into the bar as well; highlighting the restaurant's appreciation for Mexico's celebrated spirits, with drinks like the Avocado Margarita, Pineapple Sour, and Oaxacan Old Fashioned receiving enthusiastic praise from guests. Carefully selected wines and thoughtful non-alcoholic options complement the menu equally well, while knowledgeable servers happily guide diners toward pairings that enhance every course. Combined with perfectly paced service and genuine hospitality, every meal unfolds naturally without ever feeling rushed.

Alma Fonda Fina succeeds because it never loses sight of its purpose. Every thoughtfully prepared plate reflects Chef Johnny Curiel's pride in Mexican culture while embracing creativity, precision, and remarkable hospitality. Whether visiting for an intimate date night, a celebration with friends, or simply to experience one of Denver's premier restaurants, guests consistently leave impressed by the exceptional food, welcoming atmosphere, and genuine soul that define the restaurant. It's little wonder that Alma Fonda Fina has become one of Colorado's most acclaimed culinary destinations and continues to set the standard for contemporary Mexican cuisine.
