Nestled in the small town of Limon, Colorado, Alex Taverna offers a surprising and delightful culinary experience. Specializing in Mediterranean and Georgian dishes, this quaint eatery has quickly gained a reputation for serving authentic flavors that transport diners to distant lands. With a warm and inviting atmosphere, Alex Taverna is not only a place to eat but a place to experience true culinary artistry.

I'll tell you how I discovered this spot. My sister-in-law moved to Limon, Colorado for a new job opportunity and within two weeks of moving there, she discovered this restaurant. Within the first month, she paid Alex Taverna a visit four times and began sending me posts on Facebook about their fabulous dinners. There was no question that I would drop by this location when I paid her a visit over the holidays. And I'm so glad I did. It's amazing.

The restaurant’s decor is a charming blend of rustic and elegant. Soft, golden lighting illuminates the cozy interior, and traditional motifs from the Mediterranean and Georgian cultures adorn the walls. Patrons are greeted with the inviting aroma of freshly baked bread, simmering spices, and grilled meats that immediately spark the appetite. Alex Taverna’s menu is a testament to both Mediterranean and Georgian culinary traditions. For those unfamiliar with Georgian cuisine, the Khachapuri stands out as a must-try. This iconic cheese-filled bread, often referred to as the 'Georgian pizza,' is rich, comforting, and best enjoyed when shared. Its warm, doughy texture envelops a mixture of melty cheese, butter, and egg yolk, making it both indulgent and satisfying.

Another highlight from the Georgian side of the menu is the Khinkali – delightful, intricately twisted dumplings filled with a well-seasoned mixture of meat, herbs, and spices. With each bite, the juicy, flavorful broth inside the dumplings bursts forth, providing a delicious and memorable experience. The Mediterranean dishes are just as enticing. From vibrant Greek salads bursting with freshness to lamb skewers grilled to perfection, the menu showcases a dedication to quality ingredients and traditional recipes. The hummus platter, paired with freshly baked pita, is creamy, smooth, and packed with authentic, earthy flavors.

For those seeking a hearty main course, the Moussaka is a crowd-pleaser. Layered with eggplant, minced meat, and creamy béchamel sauce, it offers a symphony of textures and rich flavors. The seafood options are also worth noting, particularly the grilled octopus, which is tender, smoky, and expertly seasoned. The service at Alex Taverna is equally noteworthy. Staff members are attentive, knowledgeable, and eager to guide diners through the diverse menu. Their enthusiasm for sharing the stories behind each dish adds a personal touch to the overall experience.

During my last visit before writing this blog post: I didn't have much time to enjoy a meal and yet, it was a refreshing and amazing experience yet again. I ordered three things: (1) Beef Stroganoff, (2) Beef kabob with rice and roasted tomato sauce and (3) Baklava. And once again, the food was absolutely worth it! Can not explain the wonderful flavors I experienced. Then, the following evening, I decided to try a salad and then ordered 3 additional salads for my family at home. I have to say, absolutely everything was perfect, yet again.

Desserts are not to be overlooked. The Baklava is a standout, with its flaky layers of phyllo pastry, honey, and finely chopped nuts providing the perfect sweet conclusion to any meal. The Georgian Churchkhela, a candy-like treat made from nuts dipped in thickened grape juice, offers a unique and delicious alternative. Alex Taverna in Limon, Colorado, is a hidden gem that deserves attention. Whether you are craving familiar Mediterranean dishes or are curious to explore the lesser-known yet incredibly flavorful world of Georgian cuisine, this restaurant provides a culinary journey well worth taking.

Four things to know about this location:

  1. If you're new to this spot, consider ordering the pork schnitzel. The tender, juicy meat is encased in a crisp, golden-brown crust that delivers an ideal balance of textures. The seasoning is subtle yet rich, allowing the natural flavors of the pork to shine through, while the accompanying yellow rice elevates the overall experience. You'll thank me later.

  2. Nellie, the owner, is a character and a gem. One of the loveliest people you could hope to meet. When you pay them a visit, introduce yourself. She's a kick.

  3. As an appetizer, order their Crab Salad. Perfect for two people to share as well.

  4. You can order 'family style' that you can share with a small group. Just request it.
